Sandra Ramos, Acuarium, 2013
Acuarium (2013) is a short animation that explores the artist’s childhood memories of the Cuban public school system. The protagonist is a young girl dressed in a public school uniform who is subjected to various scenarios involving bodies of water that restrict her movements. Acuarium functions as a metaphor for the social circumstances of the Cuban people and the ways that the geographic confines of the island restrict the abilities of citizens to conduct their lives with true agency. As this young girl dressed like a Cuban Pioneer tries to escape the confines of her fish tank, surreal events begin transforming her body.

Acuario (2013) es una animación corta con la que la artista explora recuerdos de su niñez en el sistema de escuelas públicas de Cuba. La protagonista es una niña vestida con el uniforme de las escuelas públicas, a la que vemos enfrentando diferentes situaciones en las que sus movimientos se ven restringidos por un cuerpo de agua. Acuario funciona como una metáfora de las circunstancias sociales del pueblo cubano y la manera como los confines geográficos de la isla limitan la capacidad de los ciudadanos para dirigir su vida con verdadera agencia. Cada vez que esta niña vestida de Pionera cubana intenta escapar los confines de su pecera, ocurren sucesos surrealistas que comienzan a transformarle el cuerpo.
