Yucef Merhi, Color Bars, 2024

Two-channel color video, with sound 1h 0m

Yucef Merhi (b. 1977, Caracas, Venezuela; lives in Miami)

A pioneer of digital art, Yucef Merhi’s first work dates back to 1985, when he created a real-time video programmed on the Atari 2600 gaming console. Since then, Merhi has produced a wide body of work that utilizes retro gaming platforms, language models, hacking, and artificial intelligence to explore the intersection between humanity and technology.

At first glance, Color Bars references the SMPTE standard color bar signal—a test pattern used to calibrate television transmissions and monitors. Here, Merhi reduces the pattern to its red and blue hues, referencing both the binary structure of US politics and the flashing lights of law enforcement vehicles. The work also invokes the “color bar,” a term used to describe the social and legal barriers that denied Black and other nonwhite people access to the same rights and spaces as white Americans. Color Bars investigates the parallels between television’s visual language and American systems of power, highlighting the repetitions that can produce feelings of predictability, numbness, and apathy.

Accompanying the test pattern is a 1kHz sine-wave tone—the standard studio signal used in television calibration. Its constant presence reinforces a sense of familiarity while gradually becoming abrasive and difficult to ignore. Together, the red and blue hues and repetitive audio prompt viewers to consider their reactions to recurring colors, sounds, and structures long present everyday life in the United States.

Yucef Merhi (Fèt an 1977, nan Caracas, Venezuela; ap viv nan Miami)

Yon pyonye atizay dijital, premye zèv Yucef Merhi remonte nan ane 1985, lè li te kreye yon videyo an tan reyèl pwograme sou konsòl jwèt Atari 2600 la. Depi lè sa a, Merhi pwodui yon gwo kò travay ki itilize platfòm jwèt retro, modèl lang, pirataj, ak entèlijans atifisyèl pou eksplore pwen kote limanite ak teknoloji kontre.

Lè w premye gade l, _Color Bars_ fè referans ak siyal ba koulè estanda SMPTE a—yon modèl tès yo itilize pou kalibre transmisyon televizyon ak ekran. Isit la, Merhi redwi modèl la nan koulè wouj ak ble li yo, ki fè referans ak estrikti binè politik Etazini e ak limyè machin lapolis yo. Zèv la envoke tou “color bar” la, yon tèm yo itilize pou dekri baryè sosyal ak legal ki te refize moun Nwa ak lòt moun ki pa blan menm dwa ak menm espas blan Ameriken yo te genyen. _Color Bars_ envestige paralèl ki genyen ant lang vizyèl televizyon ak sistèm pouvwa Ameriken an, epi mete limyè sou repetisyon ki ka pwodwi santiman previzibilite, endiferans, ak apati.

Modèl tès la akonpaye ak yon ton ond sinis 1kHz—siyal estidyo estanda yo itilize nan kalibrasyon televizyon. Prezans konstan li ranfòse yon sans familyarite pandan li tou piti piti vin iritan epi difisil pou inyore. Ansanm, koulè wouj ak ble yo ak odyo repetitif la envite moun k ap gade yo pou yo reflechi sou reyaksyon yo devan koulè, son, ak estrikti ki la depi lontan nan lavi toulejou Ozetazini.
