Miguel Braceli (b. 1983, Valencia, Venezuela; lives in New York)
Área (Area) is a large-scale participatory performance staged by Miguel Braceli in Plaza Caracas in the heart of the Venezuelan city’s government district. The work sought to create a common “area” through the collective actions of 70 participants within a space spanning 400 linear meters. In a context in which polarization was a political strategy deployed by a dictatorial government to secure and perpetuate power, Área directly challenged the notion of such imposed divisions.
By facilitating a shared gesture in public space, the performance blurred political borders and narratives of confrontation, transforming individual bodies into a collective act of resistance. In so doing, Braceli and the participants proposed unity against division, reclaiming public space as a site of common ground and political agency. Resonating with participatory practices in Latin America that emerged in the 1960s and 1970s—when artists sought to activate collective action and social transformation outside traditional art institutions—Área continues to speak powerfully in the present, as societies worldwide grapple with increasing polarization and the urgent need to imagine new spaces for dialogue and solidarity.

Área es una performance participativa a gran escala presentada por Miguel Braceli en la Plaza Caracas, ubicada en el corazón del distrito gubernamental de la capital venezolana. La obra buscaba crear un “área” común por medio de la actuación colectiva de 70 participantes en un espacio de 400 metros lineares. Ante la estrategia política de polarización implementada por un gobierno dictatorial para asegurar y perpetuar el poder, Área representó un claro desafío a la noción de imponer tales divisiones.
Al facilitar un gesto compartido en un espacio público, la performance desdibujaba las fronteras políticas y trastocaba las narrativas de confrontación, transformando el cuerpo de los individuos en un acto de resistencia colectivo. De ese modo, Braceli y los participantes proponían la unidad, en vez de la división, y recuperaban el espacio público como un lugar de interés común y de agencia política. Notablemente influida por las prácticas participativas surgidas en América Latina en la década del sesenta y el setenta—cuando los artistas procuraban la acción colectiva y la transformación social fuera de las instituciones de arte tradicionales—Área continúa expresándose a viva voz en el presente, dado que las sociedades en todas partes del mundo continúan lidiando con la creciente polarización y la urgente necesidad de imaginar nuevos espacios para el diálogo y la solidaridad.
