Maxime Jean-Baptiste, Moune Ô, 2022

Documentary 17m France, French Guiana, Belgium

Maxime Jean-Baptiste (b. 1993, France; lives in Brussels, Belgium and Paris, France)

“I close my eyes. The crowd makes me smile, breaks my body, and that’s the end.”

By presenting the festive events which accompanied the premiere of the film Jean Galmot, aventurier (1990) by Alain Maline, in which the filmmaker’s Guianese father played a role, the images of Moune Ô reveal the survival of the colonial inheritance within a western collective unconscious always marked as stereotypes. From little gestures of daily life, the resistance toward oppression comes in its own rhythm.

Foul moun yo fè m’ souri, kraze kò m ‘, epi sa a se fen an.”

Lè yo prezante evènman fèstivite ki te akonpaye fim Jean Galmot, aventurier (1990) pa Alain Maline, kote papa Gwiyanèz reyalizatè a te jwe yon wòl, imaj Moune Ô revele eritaj kolonyal ki siviv nan yon kolektif lwès enkonsyan ki toujou make kòm estereyotip. Soti nan ti jès nan lavi chak jou, rezistans kont opresyon vini nan pwòp ritm li yo.
