Martine Syms’s A Pilot For A Show About Nowhere is structured as a television pilot and calls for systemic change within American media. The self-referential work proposes a fictional series, She Mad, centered on authentic representations of Black households in neighborhoods such as Harlem in New York, Bronzeville in Chicago, Southeast Washington, DC, and South Central Los Angeles. Throughout the video, Syms traces television’s long history of failing to represent Black life on its own terms, signaled by Oprah Winfrey reenacting the opening sequence of _The Mary Tyler Moore Show_—her favorite sitcom. The split-screen format further underscores the gap between media representation and lived experience, rejecting, as one character puts it, “none of that Hollywood shit.”
Syms argues that mainstream television has remained willfully indifferent to the history and inner life of Black communities, obscuring the realities of systemic disinvestment.
