Keisha Rae Witherspoon (b. 1980, Miami; lives in South Florida)

T by Keisha Rae Witherspoon is a genre-blurring short film that considers community technologies for transforming grief and identity. In this Afrofuturist video work, a film crew follows three grieving participants of Miami’s annual T Ball, where folks assemble to model rest-in-peace T-shirts and innovative costumes designed in honor of their dead. Documentary and narrative conventions blend as T Ball participants welcome and resist the gaze of the camera, asserting agency in their mourning and memory. In celebrating Black grief and transcendence, Witherspoon reflects on what it means to be Black in current-day Miami, the forms in which grief takes shape, and the weight of social and self-preservation. In T, community mourning and imagination becomes metamorphosis—and life, even in grief, pulses with beauty, complexity, and cosmic force. T screened at Sundance Film Festival, AFI Fest and MoMA’s New Directors New Films in 2020; won audience awards for best short film at both BlackStar and New Orleans film festivals, and won the Golden Bear for best short film at the Berlinale.
