Julien Creuzet, Nos diables rouges, nos dérives commotions...(miroir, surface et reflet), 2025

High-definition color video, with sound • 5m • France, Martinique

Julien Creuzet (b. 1986, Le Blanc Mesnil, France; lives in Montreuil, France)

Julien Creuzet’s poetic digital animations layer Caribbean and European histories to create creolized mythologies of emancipation. Drawing from his upbringing in Martinique, Creuzet constructs environments that are at once ancestral and futuristic, where cultures across the Black diaspora intertwine and identity is an evolving relationship that connects communities across time.

Nos diables rouges, nos dérives commotions…(miroir, surface et reflet) follows the Red Devil figure rooted in Martinican carnival traditions, also present across Haiti, Brazil, and the Gulf of Guinea. Masked, horned, and adorned with mirrors, the Red Devil is both provocative and sacred, never fully revealing itself. In Creuzet’s work, the once-chained figure is reinvested with new strength. Throughout the animation, the Red Devil morphs, becoming a fluid, androgynous, untamed entity that dances between the identities of Andromeda, Perseus, and Saint George. Fusing cultures and mythologies, Creuzet’s carnival figure invents their own destiny, transforming inherited traditions into new forms of belonging through movement and exchange.
