In the digital age, memories have migrated into virtual spaces, stored in servers and dispersed across networks. But when data is deleted, are we also erasing fragments of our collective consciousness?
Jack Strange reframes the “dematerialized” in our increasingly technology-dependent world, drawing witty parallels between the virtual and the physical realm. In Into a Puff of Virtual Smoke, a black screen is sporadically interrupted by a digital puff of smoke—the animation used on early Macintosh computers to signal when a file is deleted. At once humorous and unsettling, this fleeting gesture calls attention to the unseen disappearance of information. What, Strange asks, is being erased? The answer hovers between “everything” and “nothing” —an action both banal and profound.
