Hernan Bas (b. 1978, Miami; lives in Miami)
As we create memories, we deepen our understanding of the world and our place within it. Memory becomes the scaffold of maturity, slowly layering experience over innocence—until that innocence begins to erode. In Fragile Moments, teenagers playfully chase each other with shark fins, caught in a game that blurs the line between laughter and lurking danger. A second video of a kite in the form of a pirate ship—dancing in the wind—accompanies the scene, underscoring the presence of innocence. The contrast is striking: the innocence of the game set against its darker subtext—humanity’s never-ending battle with nature and the fragility of life.
In this video, young men wearing makeshift shark fins swim in circles, as if surrounding prey. Set against lush tropical landscapes, they hover at the edge of adulthood. Black-and-white projections shift between beach scenes and portrait-like images of the artist and other androgynous figures, creating a moody, intimate atmosphere.
